The Top Benefits of Cashew Nuts

Cashew nuts are the seeds of the cashew tree, which is native to Brazil. Native Americans used cashew trees as a food source long before they were discovered by European explorers. After cashew cultivation began in Europe, it quickly spread to Africa and Asia.

The cashew tree produces white or pink flowers that develop drupes. Cashew apples form when these drupes mature. Cashew apples are pear-shaped fruits that range in color from red to yellow. The cashew apple grows between the tree and the drupe. As it matures, the cashew seed or the cashew nut is seen hanging from the drupe.

Cashew nuts should be removed carefully from the drupe before consumption. This is because the outer layer is toxic and could be dangerous. Exposure to the outer layer of the drupes could cause skin rashes. Removal involves soaking or roasting the cashews. This splits the outer casing, exposing the seeds or cashew nuts. The drupes should be handled with care until the seeds have been extracted. Once the cashew nuts are removed, they are safe for consumption. Since the cashew nuts are not actually "nuts" but seeds, people with nut allergy can safely consume cashew nuts.

Cashew nuts are known for their oily and mild buttery flavor. They can be processed and eaten whole or ground into cashew butter. Whole cashews are often used in cooking savory and sweet dishes. Cashew nuts are widely used in Thai, Indian and Chinese cuisine. Cashews covered in chocolate are also available in the markets. But they are costlier than almonds and peanuts, and hence, less common.

Cashew nuts offer various health benefits. Here are some of them.

Benefits of Cashew Nuts
  • Cashew nuts contain no cholesterol. Instead, they have monounsaturated fat that promotes good cardiovascular health. Monounsaturated fats help reduce high triglyceride levels that are often linked with the increased risk of strokes and heart disease.

  • Cashew nuts are high in copper, a mineral that is essential for increasing energy and making blood vessels, bones and joints more flexible.

  • Eating a moderate amount of cashew nuts can help the body efficiently use iron to produce healthy red blood cells.

  • Cashew nuts are also rich in protein. They are an excellent meat alternative for vegetarians.

  • Cashew nuts include many other healthy nutrients such as phosphorous, magnesium, selenium and zinc. These assist in the effective function of different body systems.
