Canola Oil Benefits

The growing risk of cardiac disease around the world has convinced millions to switch to heart-healthy oils like canola oil.

Canola oil is considered one of the healthiest cooking oils in the market today. The oil contains very low saturated fats, when compared to olive oil, sunflower oil or corn oil. It thus helps prevent various cardiac diseases.

As canola is high in unsaturated fats, it contains high levels of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are essential for human consumption, as they are not produced naturally in the body.

Benefits of Canola Oil

  • Canola oil contains unsaturated fatty acids. Hence, it is not harmful for the heart unlike oils that are rich in saturated fats. It is also believed to decrease overall cholesterol levels in the body.

  • Due to its omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid content, canola oil helps stabilize blood pressure. It also cures psychological conditions like depression and anxiety.

  • The oil is rich in Vitamin E and Vitamin K. It makes your skin glow and is used to treat wrinkles, blemishes, acne and other skin-related problems.

How to Use Canola Oil

The oil has a light flavor and is used to prepare various dishes. It is used for grilling, baking and sautéing. You can also use a little canola oil in salad dressings. Many people use canola oil as a substitute for solid fats like butter and margarine.

Demystifying Myths

Although food companies claim that canola oil is the healthiest oil, there is controversy regarding its actual benefits. It is believed that canola oil contains toxic substances that cause health hazards. Many believe that the oil is produced from rapeseed, which is bad for health. Canola oil actually comes from the canola plant, which is good for health.

Caution

No oil is perfect and neither is canola oil. When heated at high temperatures, the omega-3 fatty acids in the oil get spoilt and release an unpleasant odor. They are converted to trans-fatty acids that are very harmful for the body. At times, these trans-fatty acids can even cause death.
