Types and Benefits of Teas

Tea is a beverage made by steeping dried leaves, twigs, buds and the internodes of tea plant or camellia sinensis. Tea is the second-most consumed beverage in the world, after water. The beverage generally has a cool, astringent and slightly bitter flavor that many enjoy.

Besides being a beverage that can be consumed either hot or cold, tea has health and medicinal uses. Here are some of the different types of tea and their benefits.

Green Tea

Prepared with steamed tea leaves, green tea has high epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) concentration. EGCG is an antioxidant that helps lower the risk of cancer; prevent the clogging of the arteries, burn fat, improve cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks, and lower the chances of developing neurological disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Black Tea

Black tea is made with fermented tea leaves. It has the highest caffeine content among the different types of teas. It is used as the base tea for flavored teas such as chai. Studies show that black tea can help lower the risk of strokes and protect the lungs from damage caused by exposure to cigarette smoke.

White Tea

This is uncured and unfermented tea made from the camellia sinensis plant. It is said to have more potent anti-cancer properties than the more processed teas.

Oolong Tea

Often called blue-green tea, it is a mix of green and black tea. It has a flavor that is richer than that of green tea but lighter than that of black tea. Oolong has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to improve digestion and relieve headaches. Wuyi, a type of oolong tea, is being marketed today as an effective weight-loss supplement.

Pu-erh Tea

This type of tea is made from the fermented and aged leaves of the tea plant. It is considered a black tea that helps prevent excessive weight gain and reduce cholesterol levels in the blood.

Tea can be drunk alone, or with milk or honey. Flavorings are added to some teas during processing. Some of the most popular flavorings are jasmine, bergamot and lemon.
