Sugar Is Rehabilitated in the Health BookIt is impossible to make people give up sugar entirely. Attempts at completely eliminating sugar from the diet are likely to end in failure because people will find ways of substituting the sweet substance. Even some animals are drawn to sugar. Like butter, sugar has suffered from bad publicity. A distinction must be made between refined sugar and raw sugar. Refined sugar normally brings only the sweetness and very little else. It has been effectively stripped of the nutrients that rescue sugar from the list of unhealthy foods. Refined sugar only offers pure carbohydrate, which is difficult to digest. Other essential nutrients such as calcium, potassium and magnesium are used to control sugar levels. Constant use of refined sugar is associated with weakened bones and liver failure. Weight gain is almost inevitable following overuse of refined sugar. It is also associated with reducing the effectiveness of the immune system. Older people become confused and forgetful when they over-indulge while younger people become overactive. This can lead to serious mental health problems such as depression. These factors have contributed to ruining the reputation of sugar. However, unrefined sugar offers a few benefits. It provides much-needed energy and can be a vital nutrient for some diabetics. It also helps make food tastier and more appealing to children who might otherwise refuse to eat. The key is to ensure that sugar is taken in moderation. In excess amounts, sugar will lead to obesity and a host of other problems. Also Read: |
