Benefits: Pomelo

Pomelo belongs to the family of citrus fruits. It originated in the Southeast Asian countries as well as in China and the Indian sub-continent. In some cultures, this autumnal fruit is used during auspicious occasions.

Pomelos are available in three colors -- pale yellow, pinkish and red. These fruits can weigh up to 20 pounds. The pulp color varies from pale yellow to pink and red. The fruit is both sweet and sour. The membranes are bitter and are usually discarded. Pomelo is a very useful fruit with therapeutic properties.

Benefits of Pomelo

  • The skin of the fruit is very rich in bioflavonoids. This property helps reduce pancreatic, intestinal and breast cancers. It stops cancerous cells from spreading further.

  • The fruit has high Vitamin C content. This helps retain elasticity of the arteries. It also improves the digestive system. Although the fruit has high ascorbic acid content, it produces an alkaline reaction once digested.

  • If you need to lose weight quickly, add this fruit to your daily diet. The pomelo can help you lose lots of weight because it burns the fat-burning enzymes that absorb the sugar content in the body.

  • The fruit can also be used as a remedy for diabetes, insomnia, fever and sore throat.

How to Consume

The fruit can be consumed fresh or as juice. Always select the pink or red variety as these are sweeter and very rich in nutrients.

When making pomelo juice, carefully peel off the outer skin. Do not discard the inner skin as it contains anti-cancerous elements. Many people mix sugar syrup or honey to sweeten very sour pomelos.

Caution

Some people are allergic to pomelo. In most cases, these people are also allergic to Vitamin C. Consult your doctor immediately if you see any rashes or eruptions after consuming the fruit. Excess consumption of pomelo may lead to kidney stones, constipation and other complications, which you may need to discuss with your doctor.
