Pistachios and Their Benefits

Pistachios are nuts that have a tan shell and a greenish-tan kernel. They grow on trees of the same name. Pistachio trees are grown commercially in many countries including the United States, Turkey, Iran, Greece, Italy and Syria. In the United States, pistachios are primarily cultivated in California.

Apart from being eaten as a snack, pistachios are often used in cooking and baking. They are commonly added to salads, appetizers and desserts.

Pistachios are available in different forms. You can buy them roasted, raw, candy-coated, and with or without salt. Although pistachios can be shelled easily, you can also buy the de-shelled variety.

Pistachios are known for their health benefits. Here are some of them.

Benefits of Pistachios

Pistachios have a high level of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids that promote better heart function and prevent cardiovascular diseases. Studies have linked pistachio consumption with the reduction of bad cholesterol levels and the increase of good cholesterol.

Pistachios also contain two unique carotenoids, zeaxanthanin and lutein, which are not usually found in other types of nuts. These promote good eye health and prevent the development of age-related macular degeneration.

Like other nuts, pistachios have high calorie content. However, eating them in moderation could aid your weight loss efforts. This is because pistachios have shells. Shelling takes some time, resulting in slower eating. You may feel as though you have eaten a lot even if you have not.

Pistachios include other nutrients like manganese, copper and Vitamin B6, which are essential for the proper formation of connective tissue, strengthening the immune system and the healthy production of red blood cells.

In order to get the most out of pistachios, choose the ones that come in their shells and are not heavily salted. Pistachios with tan shells and light green kernels are more nutritious than those with red shells. Pistachios with red shells are artificially colored and commonly sold during the holidays.
