Benefits of Walnuts

Nuts are generally a healthy food. But if you are specifically looking to maintain cardiac health, walnuts are a great option.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, walnuts are great in lowering cholesterol. A few walnuts a day can really help your heart. There is actually a California Walnut Commission that runs campaigns to raise awareness about the health benefits of walnuts.

Like fish, walnuts contain a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 has been known to lower LDL levels and raise HDL levels. Walnuts carry over 59 percent of unsaturated fats but contain no cholesterol. A natural walnut has about 100 g of moisture. After harvesting, they contain only about 9 percent. This lowers the amount of mold in the walnut.

Walnuts are good for cholesterol and the heart. However, they contain a lot of fat. Walnuts may not be the ideal diet food because of the high calorie and fat content, but the health benefits surpass these disadvantages. Merely eating a few walnuts each day can lower cholesterol levels significantly.
