Benefits of Castor Oil

Back in the 1950s, castor oil was something of a punishment. Ask your parents. They will relate how their parents threatened them with a dose of castor oil. Little did they know that castor oil offers health benefits.

Castor oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the castor bean. (The castor bean is not a bean, however.) Castor oil is used in some household toiletries such as soap and lubricants. The oil is very smooth and is also used in brake fluid, paints, dyes, inks and waxes.

Among the health benefits of castor oil is that it helps kidneys burn. It also serves as a laxative. It can lubricate your bowels and improve bowel function. The United States Food and Drug Administration considers castor oil a safe and effective over-the-counter laxative. It can safely be used by pregnant women during childbirth to ease the delivery.

Castor oil is also great for dry skin conditions. The lubricant in castor oil softens skin. However, castor oil is also an eye irritant and is very similar to pepper spray. Be careful when handling it. Wash your hands before touching your eye.
