Benefits of Alfalfa

The Latin name for alfalfa is medicago sativa. Its aliases are buffalo herb, lucerne and the purple medic.

Contrary to popular perception, alfalfa is a legume and not a leafy vegetable. The United States is the world's largest producer of alfalfa. The plant is also popular in Europe, Australia, South America, South Africa and China. Commonly known as alfalfa hay, it is the United States' most vital money crop after corn and soybean.

Alfalfa is a very healthy food that offers great health benefits when eaten in its pure form. For example, it is said to beneficial for people with digestive problems and is believed to be good for the heart. This is because alfalfa is enriched with fiber and legumes that are good for both the heart and the digestive system. Alfalfa supplements are popular because the herb contains beta-carotene, calcium and vitamins D, E and K. It also has a detoxifying effect.

In its leafy state, alfalfa can reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Alfalfa supplements can serve as a laxative and a diuretic. Alfalfa aids in treating infections of the urinary tract, the kidneys, the bladder and the prostate. However, when used in the herbal form, it can cause the blood to thin. Check with your doctor before taking any herbal supplements.
