Benefits: Nutmeg

Nutmeg is an aromatic spice that comes from a small evergreen tree called myristica that grows in the tropics. Native to the Banda Islands in Indonesia, nutmeg is now cultivated in parts of South India, Malaysia and the Caribbean islands. The state of Connecticut in USA is called the "nutmeg state" but the origin of this nomenclature is unknown.

Nutmeg is the seed of the tree. The reddish outer covering is another fragrant spice called mace.

Nutmeg is a rich source of minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, copper, zinc and manganese. Calcium strengthens bones while iron is required to produce red blood cells. As the spice is rich in potassium, consumption of nutmeg controls blood pressure and promotes a healthy heart. Nutmeg is also a rich source of antioxidants that promote immunity and boost general health.

Nutmeg is a common ingredient in many east and south Asian dishes. It is widely used by the curry chefs of India. It forms one of the five essential spices that are clubbed together as "garam masala" and used in most Indian curries. Nutmeg also works well in many European meat dishes. Its sweet taste makes nutmeg a popular ingredient for making desserts like cakes, cookies, custards and puddings. Nutmeg combines well with cheese and is used to prepare delicate cheese sauces.

Essential oils are obtained by grinding and steam distillation of the spice. The aroma of nutmeg oil makes it a popular ingredient in perfumes and cosmetics around the world. It is also used in baked goods as well as beverages like Coca Cola.

Nutmeg is also an effective home remedy for acne and scars. Simply combine equal quantities of milk and ground nutmeg to form a paste. Apply this on the affected areas.

Like everything else, nutmeg should be consumed in moderation. Nutmeg overdose can cause severe side effects like hallucination and nausea. It is strongly recommended that you take expert advice on the amount of nutmeg to include in your daily diet.
