Lime for Healthy LivingThe lime tree can be a beautiful addition to a compound. It grows to a height of 4.5 meters. The diametric measurements of the fruit can run up to six centimeters. The fruit is used in both sweet and savory dishes across cultures. Apart from culinary usage, lime is also used for industrial purposes as well as in creating medicines and citric acid. The term "lime" is Arabic in origin, but the fruit is popular throughout Europe as well. The tropics are its current production area. The fruit is extensively cultivated in places like Brazil, Florida, Egypt and Mexico. Lime is largely green, and gives its name to the color "lime green". When added to a juice, lime is very good at quenching thirst. The fruit has high acid content, and hence, reduces the oxidation process for cut vegetables and fruit. This is very useful in cooking because it removes the dark coloring that may affect ingredients like avocado. An analysis of the standard 100-gram sample of lime reveals some interesting facts and figures. It contains about 0.04 mg of Vitamin B. There is a trace of riboflavin and about 1 mg of niacin. The Vitamin C content stands at about 27 mg while the calcium content is nearly twice that amount. Iron is estimated at 6 mg and phosphorus at 22 mg. The fat content is 1 g and protein content is 0.8 g. The calorific total stands at 37 calories. These are typical figures for a citrus fruit. Also Read: |
