Health Benefits of Flaxseed OilDocumented studies on animals and humans have confirmed most benefits of flaxseed oil. In one study, flaxseed oil caused a reduction in low-density lipoprotein or "bad" cholesterol. Another animal study showed a decrease in blood pressure following the use of flaxseed oil. There are no human studies to substantiate the latter finding. As mentioned above, flaxseed also appears to have some estrogen and anti-estrogen effects. Hence, it is believed to provide protection against some types of prostrate and breast cancers. Unfortunately, the results proved inconclusive when these effects were studied in the laboratory and on human subjects. Further studies are being conducted to assess the benefits of flaxseed oil on breast and prostate cancers as well as on menopausal symptoms. Flaxseed was recently studied in connection with the prevention of kidney damage in individuals suffering from systemic lupus erythematou (SLE). Although the evidence presented supports its use for SLE, more studies are necessary before flaxseed can be recommended for treating the condition. The benefits of flaxseed oil on cancer prevention may not have been proved yet, but the substance offers many other health benefits. Incorporate it into your regular diet to see the results.
