The Health Benefits of Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a widely used spice with a beautiful flavor. Evidence shows that the flavorsome spice also offers health benefits.

High Blood Sugar

A study shows that adding a little cinnamon to the diet can lower the blood sugar in diabetics and others with blood sugar problems. The findings reveal that cinnamon can lower blood sugar levels on the average by 20 percent in a matter of weeks.

High Cholesterol

The same study found that including cinnamon in the diet can lower levels of bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol is partially controlled by insulin. When blood sugar is lowered, levels of bad cholesterol also fall.

Your Diet

Since adding a gooey cinnamon bun to your daily diet would do more harm than good, how can you add more cinnamon without indulging in baked goods?

Try adding a cinnamon stick to a cup of tea or sprinkling some on oatmeal or grits. Look for soup and vegetable recipes that include cinnamon. Cinnamon is used for more than just baked goods, so try some new recipes.

If you are already taking medicine to lower blood sugar or cholesterol, check with your doctor before adding cinnamon to your diet.
