Benefits of Aromatherapy

The most important question is this: does aromatherapy really work? It is nice to have your house smelling good thanks to aromatherapy oils. But do the oils benefit us? Can it improve our health? To answer this, it is important to follow scientific research on the subject.

We have collected a few examples of the benefits of aromatherapy as medicine. Note that aromatherapy is mainly used to treat depression or anxiety by making us feel calmer. When we are calm, blood pressure drops and concentration is better.

Benefits of Aromatherapy

It Makes You More Alert

One aromatherapy research found that adults exposed to rosemary showed decreased frontal alpha and beta power, suggesting increased alertness. They also had lower anxiety levels and performed math computations faster.

In the same research, adults exposed to lavender showed higher beta power, suggesting increased relaxation. They performed math computations not only faster but also with fewer errors. It was also reported that they felt less depressed.

This research was published in the International Journal of Neuroscience, 1996

Reduces Depression

Another aromatherapy research confirmed the claim that aromatherapy can help reduce depression. A UK-based research conducted in 1995 showed that using Roman chamomile essential oils in massage effectively reduced anxiety in cancer patients. The trial reported that patients massaged using only base oils did not enjoy the same benefit.

Benefits for Sleep Disorders

Toss those sleeping pills away. Hospital nurses in the UK have reported that lavender essential oils used before bedtime (whether inhaled, added to a hot bath or used in a massage) make you feel calmer and induce sleep.

Try a Burner

In 1993, researchers at the Queen Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital, Birmingham, UK reported that epileptics at the hospital suffered fewer seizures when they learned to relax using essential oils.

Cardiac Patients Research

In a 1994 trial at Middlesex London Hospital, cardiac patients reportedly felt a lot calmer when neroli oils were used during their massage session than when vegetable oils were used.
