Caution When Using Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Although aromatherapy is usually gentle and compatible with conventional medicine, certain factors must be considered while using essential oils. It is generally safe to use aromatherapy essential oils at home but keep the following things in mind.

Do Not Drink It

Just because it is made of plants or flowers does not mean that it is safe for consumption. Do not take essential oils internally without the advice of a doctor or a registered aromatherapist. Only certain oils can be taken internally. Check with the experts first.

Dilute It First

If you are going to use it for a massage, dilute it first using a base oil. Do not apply undiluted essential oils on the skin (except lavender oil on burns and tea tree oil on insect stings). If you are using it in a bath, use modest quantities (5 to 15 drops of oil per bathtub).

Eyes and Children

Like all other medicines, keep it out of the reach of your children and avoid contact with the eyes.

Consult a Qualified Practitioner

Some people should consult a registered aromatherapist or a qualified practitioner. These include:
  • Pregnant women

  • Those taking homeopathic treatment

  • Infants

  • Those with medical problems such as allergy and chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure
