Finding the Harmony Within by Using Aromatherapy

Coming home at the end of a stressful day is usually something we all look forward to greatly. Each day we give the best of ourselves to other people, but once home we are able to finally find the time to sit and "do us". For a growing number of people this includes enjoying the opportunity to rejuvenate the body and return peace and calm to the body through the use of essential oils and aromatherapy. Psychosomatic illnesses have been known by doctors for many years. These are very real symptoms affecting the human body, but the cause is the upset going on in our lives rather than a disease.

What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the science of using essential oils taken from plants and herbs and using their vapors to stimulate the brain and promote health and a sense of well being in body, mind and spirit. Burning oils, inhaling oils or using them as skin rubs so they are absorbed into the skin are three ways people commonly gain the benefit of using the oils.

Burning oils and incense and the use of essential oils in general was at one time associated with alternative lifestyles, but as the benefits of aromatherapy has become widely known, most of our homes use aromatherapy in some form or another, even if it is only sprinkling a little lavender in our bedrooms to help us sleep or using vanilla in our kitchens to neutralize food odors.

For most people the journey into researching and then using oil blends is fascinating and once they have realized just how many uses each different oil blend can have, it is not uncommon for people to start stocking and using different oils as they have need.

Blending Essential Oils at Home

Some of the more popular and common oils that we all have around the home include peppermint oil, rose oil, lavender, vanilla and lemon. Though these are usually bought as bottled oils, it is possible to create them from the same products around the home. Making your own oils is something many people find just as relaxing and therapeutic as actually using the oils can be.

Good quality oil that is bland in smell and color and some plants with the fragrance you require are all that is required to make homemade essential oils. For lavender and rose fragrance you will need unopened flowers cut just as they are about to open so they have maximum fragrance and you only need the petals. Peppermint is an herb and as with all herbs, to make the oils, you will require the leaves and flowers but not the stem. The zest of lemon or lime is required to make a lemon fragrance.

In most cases all that is required to make beautiful fragranced essential oils is to soak the parts of the plant you have chosen in the oil for a day or two and then remove the old plant and replace it with new plants until the required smell is created. The more times this process continues the stronger the smell created. Leaving the oil blend in a warm position or heating the oil will speed the process and straining the oil will remove any old pieces of plant material from it once the desired fragrance is achieved.

Oils can be made from almost every living plant, herb or spice and the combination of smells produced will fill your home with smells that will invigorate and rejuvenate and depending on how they are used, will provide your family with relief from the symptoms of many different ailments.
