Feel the Benefits of Herbal Therapies

It wasn't that long ago that herbal therapy belonged to those who were hippies or who followed other alternative or New Age lifestyles. This is not the case today. Around the world, people from all different walks of life are embracing herbs and herbal therapy as a means of dealing with the consequences of life style choices that can leave the average person feeling drained and run down.

Herbs Have Been Used for Thousands of Years

History shows that for thousands of years ancient civilizations have used herbal remedies for their illnesses and injuries. Modern pharmaceutical practices use many of the concepts drawn from these ancient remedies. Some of the most prescribed drug preparations use herbs or plants as their basic ingredients, but have added chemicals and ingredients that supposedly increased their potency. Examples include aspirin which is a pain killer and blood thinner. It is derived from a plant called willow bark. Digitalis which regulates the heart beat is derived from the fox glove plant.

With such strong evidence in favor of the validity of herbs and plants for medicinal uses why has there been reluctance by main stream medicine to embrace such therapies and why are more people choosing to seek alternative therapies and herbal therapy to treat many common ailments?

Herbs Have Few Side Effects

Mainstream prescribed medicines while being very effective, often produce side effects that can be very severe. Herbal therapies will usually only produce side effects if a person is allergic to them. There are very few other side effects.

The internet has provided people with information on the many uses of different herbs to deal with medical conditions and many of these are herbs that are easily bought in stores and through fresh food markets an increasing number of people are learning how to use herbs to make home remedies for many common every day illnesses.

The Benefits of Drinking Herbal Teas

Some of the more common herbal remedies that can be prepared safely at home include:

  • Peppermint tea which is particularly useful for upset stomachs and nausea. It is a safe and popular remedy for morning sickness and many pregnant women choose to sip peppermint tea in preference to taking anti nausea medications. Ginger tea has a similar anti nausea effect.
  • Hibiscus tea has been used for thousands of years as a relaxing drink that has a calming effect as well as reducing blood pressure and helping with weight loss. It is very high in Vitamin C and by drinking it regularly it helps improve the immune system.
  • Cinnamon is known to control blood sugar levels and is widely used in teas and is added to cereals such as oatmeal as a means of regulating blood sugar levels. It has an important role to play in improving digestion due to its effect on the digestive system.

Herbal Therapies and Their Safe Uses

It is important to note that some of the other effects of herbs may mean that not all herbs are safe to use at certain times in a person's life. For example, some herbs such as Ginko Bilboa, garlic and St John's Wart are all regularly used herbs, however they are blood thinners and if used together with aspirin could lead to excessive bleeding. Cinnamon is a known uterine stimulant and its pregnant mothers should restrict their use of cinnamon until after their baby has been born.

Hot herbal teas are the perfect alternative to drinking coffee and cola and other substances and will benefit you as you drink them. If you haven't tried them, try one today and once you have found one you like, use its benefits and feel the difference.
