How to Buy Vitamins
If you are looking for vitamins that are convenient, effective and safe, there are many options from which to choose.
Vitamins are often available in specific formulations. The sheer variety of formulations can be confusing. Most formulations do not provide increased benefits and may not be worth the extra money.
When buying vitamins, remember that they come in different forms, each of which is effective depending on how they are taken and how quickly they are absorbed into the body. Most people find it easiest to take vitamins in the form of capsules and tablets. But there are other alternatives as well. Read on to learn about the various forms of vitamins.
- Tablets: These vitamins are easily stored and have a longer shelf life. They contain compounds that break down easily in the stomach.
- Capsules: Fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, E and D) are available in capsules called soft gels. These have fewer additives, and some research shows that they dissolve faster. This does not mean they are absorbed faster, however; they simply dissolve quicker.
- Powders: If you find it hard to swallow pills, use vitamin powders that can be added to drinks or sprinkled over food. Powders also allow for easy adjustment of doses. They may be cheaper than pill vitamins.
- Liquid Vitamins: Many people prefer liquid vitamins because these are easy to swallow and often flavored. Some liquids can be applied on the skin (such as Vitamin E), while others have more specific functions (like eye drops).
- Chewables: These vitamins generally come in wafer form. They are ideal for people and children who are unable to swallow pills.
- Lozenges: Many vitamins are available as lozenges that dissolve in the mouth. They are easier to use, and can help treat a cold or flu.
