Does Vitamin E Cream Really Work? The researchers suggested this because Vitamin E is virtually an antioxidant for the skin. Antioxidants combat free radicals that damage internal tissues and organs. The reasoning was that if Vitamin E functions as an antioxidant, it should have similar effects on external tissue repair. Yet, recent research shows otherwise. Contrary to popular belief that Vitamin E cream promotes scar tissue healing, research suggests that it could have the opposite effect. Researchers studied the effect of Vitamin E cream on scar removal by testing it on 15 subjects who had experienced malignant skin tumor removal. The 15 subjects were asked to use two kinds of post-surgery creams. One cream was made of simple moisturizers; the other contained the same ingredients with the addition of Vitamin E. The subjects placed the first cream on one half of the wound, and the second cream on the other half. This procedure was followed twice a day for a month. The subjects and researchers watched for cosmetic differences in the wounds at the end of the first, fourth and twelfth weeks following the study's initiation. The study results may have come as a surprise. In 90 percent of the subjects, the Vitamin E cream not only failed to improve the scars but also worsened their overall appearance. Further, 33 percent of the subjects developed a reaction to the Vitamin E cream. The researchers then discouraged using Vitamin E cream to heal scars. Nevertheless, Vitamin E has many powerful antioxidant effects and can be effectively used topically in this respect. Also Read:
