Vitamin Deficiency More Common That Thought

Recent research indicates that up to 64 percent of postmenopausal women do not get enough Vitamin D. Many suffer from serious Vitamin D deficiency.

Researchers studied 2,600 women from around the world who were menopausal and suffering from osteoporosis. The study found that the rate of osteoporosis was a staggering 90 percent in non-equatorial countries. Researchers already know that Vitamin D deficiency contributes to osteoporosis, so these findings are reason for concern. The results indicate that postmenopausal women need to be educated about maintaining healthy bones. The study suggests that insufficient supply of Vitamin D combined with lack of awareness result in a deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency is also being linked to obesity, depression, diabetes, prostate cancer and breast cancer.

Our body manufactures Vitamin D when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Even though supplementation can increase Vitamin D levels, this deficiency can be tackled by simply spending 10 or 15 minutes in the sun everyday. Of course, conditions like osteoporosis, prostate cancer and breast cancer may occur even when there is sufficient supply of the vitamin. In such cases, treatment would involve the use of prescription medications.

Unfortunately, the body's capacity to produce Vitamin D decreases as we get older. Hence, postmenopausal women are at a higher risk of developing Vitamin D deficiency. Even people who take required amounts of the vitamin may suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. This suggests that current recommended allowances are insufficient. Vitamin D deficiency can be treated easily, yet the condition is far more common than it should be.
