The Effects of Vitamin D DeficiencyOne research trial showed that almost 300 patients of different age groups were hospitalized for various reasons. Over 57 percent of the patients also had Vitamin D deficiencies. The study found that deficiencies were also noted in patients who received enough Vitamin D either through supplements or in their diet. Researchers thus concluded that the present Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) for Vitamin D are probably not sufficient. The current RDA of Vitamin D is 200 IU daily for people under 50 years of age, 400 IU for people aged between 51 and 70, and 600 IU for people over 70. Doctors and nutritionists feel that the RDAs for people above 50 may be on the lower side. Vitamin D deficiency first appears as bone damage. In children, it may trigger a bone-weakening disease called rickets. Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to muscle twitches, diarrhea, nervousness, and insomnia. Nowadays, rickets in children is not very common because milk is fortified with Vitamin D. It also helps that most children spend time outdoors and produce sufficient Vitamin D.
