What to Look for in Prenatal Vitamins

If you enjoy good overall health, you are probably doing a great job at meeting your nutritional needs. When you are pregnant, there is another person to consider. Regardless of how healthy you are, prenatal vitamins are necessary during pregnancy. Your doctor may have already recommended some. If not, and if you want to get a head start, here are some tips on choosing prenatal vitamins.

Prenatal vitamins are the single best way to ensure that you receive adequate amounts of folic acid every day. The daily recommendation before pregnancy is 400 mcg. It is best that you start these at least a month before getting pregnant. When you find out that you are pregnant, increase the dosage to 600 mcg a day. Studies indicate that this decreases the chances of neural tube defects by up to 70 percent. Most prenatal vitamins contain at least 600 mcg of folic acid. If yours does not, purchase this vitamin separately.

Iron is the second most important prenatal vitamins. A large majority of women is iron-deficient, and iron requirements increase during pregnancy. This is because the body produces more blood to support the little one growing inside the womb. This depletes iron stores, making it necessary for pregnant women to take prenatal vitamins that are fortified with iron. The recommended amount is currently 27 mg, 50 percent more than a non-pregnant woman would need. Most prenatal vitamins carry this much iron. If your prenatal vitamins do not meet the dosage, you can purchase iron vitamins separately.

Regardless of overall health, all pregnant women should take prenatal vitamins. Think of it as additional insurance for the health of your baby and you.
