Use Precaution When Taking Multi Vitamins

As people seek healthier lifestyles, multivitamins are becoming increasingly popular.

Know your multivitamin before you start taking it. What is a multivitamin? It is a compound that contains more than one kind of vitamin in a single serving. Today, multivitamins include pills, capsules and tablets that contain different vitamins and minerals, and sometimes even herbal compounds. Multivitamins are a valuable resource for people who do not meet their nutritional needs or whose nutritional requirements differ from that of the average person. For instance, the nutritional needs of pregnant women and the elderly are different from average people. They may need multivitamin supplementation.

Multivitamins essentially fill the gaps in our diets. The diets of most people do not supply the recommended dosage of all required vitamins. Multivitamin supplements are an effective method of ensuring optimum vitamin intake.

Multivitamins are excellent in correcting nutritional deficiencies. Take precautions before using any multivitamins, particularly if you have existing medical issues. Pregnant women should ask their doctors to prescribe suitable multivitamins. If you have severe nutritional and vitamin deficiencies, a multivitamin may not be enough; you may need medical assistance as well.

Check with your doctor if you want to take something stronger than over-the-counter vitamins. Avoid taking high quantities of too many vitamins all at the same time. Vitamins that should not be taken in high quantities include iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin B6, niacin and potassium. Many prescription medications may also interact with multivitamins. Check with your doctor before starting a course.
