The Importance of Folic Acid Vitamin

Folic acid is a vitamin that gets a lot of media coverage. Why? Simply because the folic acid vitamin prevents over 50,000 deaths from coronary disease each year. The folic acid vitamin also significantly reduces the number of babies born with common birth defects. Folic acid is known for its potential in cancer prevention as well. Yet, despite this wide range of benefits, 90 percent of Americans are not ingesting enough of it.

Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin from the B vitamin family. The vitamin was first discovered in the 1940's after being extracted from spinach. The body does not store folic acid over extended periods, so it is critical to refuel your body's supply everyday. Refueling is necessary because the body uses folic acid multiple times a day to produce blood cells, manufacture muscle and aid in healing wounds. This vitamin is also necessary during cell division and in the production of RNA and DNA production.

Folic acid is particularly important for development of a fetus, as it supplies essential chemicals for a growing infant's neurological system. It is essential during the first trimester of pregnancy to decrease the risk of birth defects like spina bifida.

Folic acid also regulates chemical levels, protecting the blood arterial and vessel lining from damage. A deficiency of folic acid could make the arterial and vessel lining more prone to fatty deposit accumulation. This is strong indication that folic acid helps fight coronary disease. It is also known to prevent lung, cervical, colon and rectal cancers.

In order to prevent the abovementioned diseases and maximize overall health, a daily dose of 400 to 800 mcg is recommended. Pregnant women should consume at least 800 mcg daily. Folic acid can be taken anytime with or without food. Make sure to team a folic acid vitamin with 1,000 mcg of Vitamin B12 to prevent B12 deficiencies.
