The Many Benefits of Vitamin E.

Vitamin E is best known for its antioxidant properties. The antioxidants fight free radicals that could produce cell and tissue damage in the body.

Vitamin E also contributes to circulatory health, assists in blood clotting and speeds up healing of wounds. Many women have discovered that Vitamin E eases premenstrual cramps.

Even research corroborates the benefits of Vitamin E. Recent studies show that large doses of the vitamin prevent coronary artery disease. Studies conducted on animals show that ingestion of Vitamin E slows the progression of clogged arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis. The American Heart Association is waiting for results from larger controlled trials before recommending the use of Vitamin E supplements to treat atherosclerosis.

Vitamin E is also considered helpful in retarding the aging process. Many researchers believe that this is due to the vitamin's ability to protect tissues and cells from damage by free radicals. Evidence also suggests that it promotes immunological health in older people. In a study of 88 healthy people aged 65 and above, those taking 200 IU of Vitamin E a day showed the greatest increase in immune system responses.

Other studies suggest that Vitamin E may fight toxins from cigarette smoke. In a study concerning thousands of smokers, Vitamin E supplementation reduced the risk of prostate cancer by 33 percent and death rate from the disease by 41 percent. Subjects in the study received a daily dosage of 50 IU. This indicates that even low doses of Vitamin E can offer protective benefits.

Vitamin E is also reported to treat Parkinson's, stall the production of cataracts and slow the onset of Alzheimer's.
