Benefits of VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin. Our skin produces it on exposure to energy of the sun, although dietary intake is also important. Like hormones, Vitamin D is produced in one part of the body but carries out its functions elsewhere.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is required for calcium and phosphorus absorption. Our body needs only a small quantity of Vitamin D, but even that is very essential in regulating calcium metabolism. Vitamin D deficiency causes weak bones, and could eventually lead to osteoporosis.

Vitamin D in Nature

Apart from the sun, you can get your daily Vitamin D requirement from fishes like herring, mackerel, sardines and rainbow trout. Other dietary sources like salmon, tuna, eggs and cheddar cheese contain very low quantities of Vitamin D.

Go outdoors more often if you are concerned about your Vitamin D levels, but keep your sunscreen at home. Sunscreen blocks sunrays from creating Vitamin D in the body. Skin cancer is not a concern if your daily sun exposure is limited to only 10 to 15 minutes.

Benefits of Vitamin D

  • Vitamin D protects against osteoporosis by encouraging calcium absorption.

  • It boosts the immune system and is believed to protect the body from infection.

  • It is necessary for building strong teeth and bones.

  • It helps treat psoriasis.

Who Would Benefit?

Although our body produces Vitamin D naturally, some people may need to increase their Vitamin D levels through supplements. Vitamin D supplements are particularly effective against the following health problems.

Osteoporosis

The elderly and others at risk of osteoporosis can benefit from Vitamin D supplements. The supplements can increase calcium absorption, thereby strengthening bones and preventing brittleness.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis patients are usually Vitamin D deficient. Daily intake would show improvement in their condition.

Gum and Teeth Disease

People with weak gums can benefit from Vitamin D supplements. The vitamin helps reduce further loss of jawbone from periodontal disease.

Caution

Vitamin D is the most toxic vitamin. Overdose can cause nausea, vomiting, headache and depression. Take care not to exceed the daily limit of 10 mg. Keep in mind that taking Vitamin D-rich cod liver oil alongside Vitamin D supplements could result in excessive intake.
