Benefits of Niacin (Vitamin B3)

This article is not complete. Readers are advised to visit later.

Vitamin B3 or niacin is from the B vitamin family. Easily destroyed by light, this vitamin is required to form red blood cells and antibodies.

Lack of Vitamin B3 during pregnancy may damage a developing fetus. The vitamin is also helpful in easing pregnancy cramps.

The first indicators of a Vitamin B3 deficiency are cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth, as well as skin lesions. This is because Vitamin B3 helps tissues use oxygen. Lack of the vitamin shows up on the skin tissues first.

Benefits of Vitamin B3

  • It lowers blood cholesterol levels and improves blood circulation.

  • It acts as a memory enhancer, and is beneficial in treating schizophrenia.

  • Vitamin B3 supplements help people with hay fever allergies.

  • It has been shown to reduce alcohol cravings.

  • It is needed to maintain healthy skin and treat acne.

  • It aids in the functioning of the nervous system.

Vitamin B3 in Nature

Vitamin B3 is found in chicken, wheat germ, turkey, beef, whole meal bread, carrot, tomatoes and broccoli.

Who Would Benefit?

Some people may need to take vitamin B3 supplements. These include:
  • People with poor diets
  • Diabetics

Absorption Helper

Vitamin B3 is absorbed well in the presence of selenium, a mineral found in red meat and Brazil nuts. It is also easily absorbed when taken with other B vitamins.

Absorption Hindrance

Antidepressant drugs and contraceptive pills can decrease Vitamin B3 levels in your body. Smoking and excessive alcohol intake may do similar damage.

Caution

Pregnant women, as well as patients of diabetes, glaucoma, gout, peptic ulcers and liver disease should use niacin with caution.
