Scientific Studies on Deep Breathing

So you have decided to spend a few more minutes on Oohoi to examine studies on deep breathing. If you reached here via the Breathing Technique page, I hope I don't have to do much to convince you about the advantages of deep breathing. If you reached this page via a search engine and are interested in clinical studies related to deep breathing, we have a few examples for you. Let us see what deep breathing, or for that matter, shallow breathing (which results in a lack of oxygen), could do for our body.

Cancer and Oxygen Intake

Dr. Otto Warburg, director of the Max Planck Institute and a Nobel Prize winner had studied the effect of oxygen on cells. What did he find? He discovered that normal cells could be turned into malignant ones simply by lowering the amount of oxygen available to these cells. (I repeat this from the Breathing Technique page)

More on Cancer and Oxygen Intake

Dr. Harry Goldblatt also published a study on the relationship between oxygen and malignant cells in the Journal of Experimental Medicine (1953). Dr. Goldblatt's experiment was conducted on a rat species that was not known to contract cancer. He took cells from newborn rats of this species and divided the cells into three groups. He placed the cells in glass jars and deprived one group of oxygen occasionally, for 30 minutes at a time. After a few weeks, many cells from this group had died. Some changed their structure and became malignant or cancerous cells. The other two groups remained normal and unaffected.

PMS and Depression

If you think that the above are research from the dinosaur age, let us look at studies that are more recent.

Alice Domar, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School found that deep diaphragmatic breathing and other mind-body techniques could significantly reduce symptoms of severe PMS and depression. Other studies have shown that menopausal women who learned deep breathing were able to reduce the frequency of hot flushes by half.

Fertility

Alice Domar's studies also found that deep breathing, when used alongside other mind-body techniques, can promote fertility. In one case study, 132 women with infertility took a course in deep breathing, stress management and lifestyle changes. After the course, a surprising 42 percent of these women conceived within six months.

Can we get a healthier body without using drugs? You bet! Correct breathing and simple lifestyle changes can help the body naturally.

Toxin Elimination

At Santa Barbara, lymphologist Dr. Jack Shields found that deep diaphragmatic breathing could accelerate the process of toxin elimination from the body by as much as 15 times.

You do not need to be a scientist to sense that the faster the body gets rid of toxins, the better it will function.

Yes, we know our pages offer limited information about deep breathing. I will see if I can add more information. But before you go, you must learn about the second-most important factor for establishing good health -- The Healthy Eating Habit. Why does it matter? Because most people fail to cultivate the habit of healthy eating. If you really desire health, check what we have to offer for you. Let us learn more about the healthy eating habit.
