How many times have you been told to "just breathe?" You may have offered the same advice to family, friends or co-workers. Sadly, we take the natural act of breathing for granted. You can take breathing lessons from healthcare professionals, exercise instructors and even online. You may not realize it, but many exercise routines include breathing lessons!

Consider yoga. Breathing lessons are an important part of any yoga routine. Students and practitioners are encouraged to breathe deep, right into the diaphragm. Quick, shallow breaths to the chest are a no-no! Deep breathing can give you focus, slow your heart rate, and calm your mind and body.

The most popular breathing lessons teach the art of belly breathing. Belly breathing is deep breathing that draws maximum oxygen into the body, helping it relax. Breathing instructors often advise students to place their hand on their abdomen, so as to ensure that the belly expands and retracts with each breath. This is the key to mastering the art of breathing.

You will have to be patient though. A single breathing lesson is not enough. You cannot learn to dance or play a piano in one lesson. The same rule holds for breathing.

Once you have completed a program of breathing lessons, use the techniques whenever you feel stress or anxiety. Keep practicing the deep breathing techniques. Remember, "Use it or lose it!"
