Breathing Fresh Air is Increasingly Becoming a RarityBreathing Fresh Air Is a Child's Birth RightThe number of people suffering respiratory diseases in our society continues to increase. For many people, the simple act of taking a breath takes effort. Many of these diseases are the result of personal life choices (such as smoking related illnesses); others however, are the result of pollutants in the atmosphere and around the home. While it may be impossible to reverse the damage caused by many years of industrialization, there are many things that we can do to help restore the environment and improve the atmosphere and therefore the air our children are breathing. Practices We Can Adopt to Improve the Quality of the Air in Our HomesThe air we breathe is naturally cleaned by the presence of vegetation. Carbon dioxide is required by plants to convert chlorophyll, the green colored substance that nourishes them and gives them their green color, into food. The plant extracts the carbon dioxide, uses it in the process known as photosynthesis and then releases oxygen into the atmosphere. This oxygen is the clean air we need to breathe and to remain healthy. At a time when trees and land are being cleared for housing and development, we as concerned consumers can surround our homes with plants and trees, both indoors and outdoors. This simple effective act has an immediate effect on the air quality around our homes and the double benefit of improving the value of our home. It is essential we realize that the air within our homes can be more polluted than the air outside them. Every day we use chemicals and pesticides in our homes with little consideration of the effect they can have on our health. Droplets form in the air which we breathe in each time we take a breath. Reducing these products use to a minimum and replacing them with natural cleaning products and non chemical based products will have an immediate effect on our environments and potentially can improve our family's general health and well being. Airing the home regularly by opening doors and windows in preference to using air conditioning is another simple way of improving the air quality in the home. If air conditioning is used, the air vents and system should be regularly cleaned to reduce the number of disease causing microorganisms that can congregate in the moist environment of the ducts. Saving the Wider EnvironmentWe can all reduce the pollution of the environment by reducing the number of fossil fuels we burn and by leaving our car at home when we are able to. These are small changes to our lifestyles and may seem small, but if we all do our part, we are all contributing to a healthier future and a world where breathing clean air is the gift we give to our children. Also Read: |
