Healthy Living in an Unhealthy World

Our communities are becoming increasingly risky places to live. The atmosphere is being increasingly polluted with the consequences of our lifestyle choices. The foods we eat are genetically modified and covered in pesticides, producing more diseases and allergies in the general population. The consumption of increased amounts of processed and fast foods is leading to obesity levels that have become matters of national concern. With such a trend developing the world over, the question must be asked. "Is healthy living possible in such an unhealthy world?"

The Resistance Against Unhealthy Lifestyles

Despite the trend towards convenience foods and lifestyles, there is a growing resistance against what some have seen as lifestyles forced on them by businesses and governments. In many parts of the world, people are taking control of their lifestyles, changing their choices and reverting back to lifestyles enjoyed by their grandparents and great grandparents.

The history of the USA reveals a long association with the land and the ability of the pioneers to live off the land was continued in the Amish tradition of living completely without the comforts of life that most Americans have come to expect. As the media reports the evidence of lifestyle related diseases, people are buying blocks of lands and choosing to go "off the grid" or reduce their use of the conveniences of modern life and create their own "heaven on earth" by creating a self sustaining lifestyle on their land.

Throughout the country, little houses are replacing mansions and people are turning to eco friendly lifestyles to do their "bit" to reduce the pollutants contaminating the earth. Downsizing their homes, reducing their dependence of cars and chemical based products and growing their own produce are paving the way for a new focus on healthy lifestyles, not only amongst those people who choose this drastic life style change, but by the millions of others in the USA and around the world, who are modifying their choices in more conventional lifestyles.

Modifications of Lifestyle Choices That Encourage Healthy Living Practices

The simplest lifestyle modification that people are choosing is the decision to prepare fresh foods in the home rather than buying convenience and processed foods from the supermarket. The simple choice of changing from tinned tomatoes to fresh tomatoes to make a sauce reduces the exposure of the family to potentially carcinogenic toxins that are caused by the interaction of the tomatoes and the tins they are processed and sold in.

Other choices include walking or car pooling to reduce the numbers of cars on the roads and reducing the numbers of chemical based cleaning products used around the home. Many people are taking the time to create their own products from completely natural ingredients, which immediately reduces their family's exposure to allergen producing chemicals and other disease causing organisms.

Teaching Our Children How to Live Healthy Lifestyles

Parents, teachers and other adults must work together to reduce the risk being placed on our children's health by the lifestyle choices we make for them. Helping a child to appreciate and enjoy fresh foods must start from baby hood and continue through child hood. As adults we must set the example and make choices for our own life that reflect what we are trying to teach our children.

Involving children in healthy lifestyle choices is a wonderful way of not only affecting their choices as children, but it will have an ongoing affect on the choices they make in their adult life and as they themselves become parents, potentially in the lives of their children and grand children.
